DB SCHENKER and Microsoft Cloud Logistics: Redefining Logistics for a Sustainable Future
Partnerships are vital to the success of DB SCHENKER, and the collaboration with Microsoft Cloud Logistics is a prime example of how a collaborative effort can drive positive environmental change.
In April 2024, DB SCHENKER took a significant step forward by securing a contract for the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF) for Microsoft Cloud Logistics United States Inbound Air and Ocean shipments, highlighting their collective commitment to comprehensively reducing the ecological footprint of their transportation practices.
“Microsoft and DB SCHENKER, that’s two global leaders united to reduce emissions in transportation and logistics. Our cooperation is expected to demonstrate that significant CO2e-savings are feasible already in today’s intercontinental supply chains. The upgrade of the Netherlands warehouse to BREEAM Excellent status and the Illinois, United States SuperHub receiving the LEED Platinum Certification are prime examples of our dedication to paving the way for more sustainable and innovative logistics solutions.” Jochen Thewes, CEO DB SCHENKER
This collaboration also includes building resource-saving logistics SuperHubs and implementing alternative fuel trucks. This comprehensive approach tackles Scope 3 emissions - associated with their logistical operations – and aligns with the environmental goals of DB SCHENKER and Microsoft Cloud Logistics. The use of SAF and SMF will be procured by DB SCHENKER, resulting in a reduction of at least 15.000t of CO2e emissions per year.
“Our collaboration with DB SCHENKER has enabled the development of cutting-edge sustainable warehouses along with innovative fuel strategies across all modes of freight, exemplifying our dedication to setting industry standards in the logistics environmental sustainability arena.” Cliff Henson, CVP of Microsoft Cloud Supply Chain
The commitment of DB SCHENKER does not stop there. In March 2024, DB SCHENKER implemented Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) for all ocean shipments from a West Coast port in the United States to a location in Texas. In addition, DB SCHENKER expanded their environmental sustainability efforts with Microsoft Cloud Logistics to land transport in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, utilizing HVO100 fueling stations and electric vehicles. Additionally, local distribution in the Czech Republic is handled by battery electric trucks.
Advanced logistics Superhubs are another pillar of the joint sustainability efforts. These facilities are designed to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and minimize environmental impact through the use of renewable energies. A prime example is the DB SCHENKER and Microsoft Cloud Logistics EED Platinum certified facility in Illinois, United States. The prestigious LEED Platinum certification is the highest level of certification granted by the U.S. Green Building Council and demonstrates leadership of DB SCHENKER in environmental and community stewardship. In addition to the SuperHub in the United States, Microsoft Cloud Logistics Netherlands warehouse carries the BREEAM Certificate Level “Excellent,” thus ensuring energy efficiency, minimizing environmental impact, and enhancing occupant well-being.
The message is clear: a more sustainable future is within reach. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to the environment DB SCHENKER and Microsoft Cloud Logistics prove that sustainable practices can be seamlessly integrated into global supply chains.
